01 — Overview

Jodhpur at a glance.

Blue lanes, sandstone forts, and desert light in Marwar.

Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, Jodhpur became the capital of Marwar and still feels anchored by Mehrangarh, the great hill fort that stands roughly 400 feet above the city. From its ramparts, the old walled city spreads out in blue-washed lanes, temple spires, rooftop cafes, and market streets that catch the desert light beautifully. The best Jodhpur route balances palace-scale history with slower local texture. Start at Mehrangarh Fort and Museum for palanquins, arms, paintings, carved jharokhas, and palace rooms such as Moti Mahal and Phool Mahal. Walk or drive down to Jaswant Thada, the quiet marble cenotaph near the fort, then save time for Toorji Ka Jhalra, Clock Tower, Sardar Market, and the blue lanes around Navchowkiya. Jodhpur also rewards short detours: Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum shows the city's 20th-century royal chapter, Mandore Gardens preserves the older Marwar capital, Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park explains the rocky Thar ecology below the fort, and Bishnoi villages around Guda/Salawas add craft, wildlife, and rural context. It is ideal for heritage lovers, photographers, food-focused travelers, and anyone building a Rajasthan route between Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, and the desert.
