05 — Getting there

Reaching Spiti's Remote Heart

By air

The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar, KUU), approximately 250 km away. From Bhuntar, taxis or buses are available to Manali, then onwards to Kaza (seasonal via Kunzum Pass). Alternatively, Shimla Airport (SLV) or Leh Airport (IXL) are also options, requiring longer road journeys.

By rail

The nearest major railway stations are Chandigarh (CDG) or Kalka (KLK). From there, one must take a bus or taxi to Shimla, then embark on the challenging road journey to Kaza via the Kinnaur Valley.

By road

Kaza is accessible via two main routes. The more popular route during summer (June-October) is from Manali via the formidable Kunzum Pass (seasonal). The other, longer but often open for more months, is from Shimla via Kinnaur Valley, following the Hindustan-Tibet Highway. Both routes are challenging, with rough terrain and require experienced drivers or local buses.
