01 — Overview
Palaces, blue lakes, and golden evenings in the Aravallis.
Founded in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of Mewar, Udaipur is framed by the Aravalli hills and a chain of lakes that make the city feel softer and more romantic than Rajasthan's desert towns. The old city gathers around Lake Pichola, where the City Palace complex, Jag Mandir, ghats, and heritage havelis create one of India's most atmospheric urban waterfronts. The best way to experience Udaipur is slowly: museum mornings at the City Palace, temple bells at Jagdish Temple, a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola, and evenings at Bagore Ki Haveli or a quiet rooftop above the water. Beyond the lakefront, Saheliyon Ki Bari, Fateh Sagar Lake, Shilpgram, Ahar, and the hilltop Monsoon Palace add gardens, craft, history, and sweeping views. Udaipur works for couples, families, heritage lovers, photographers, and first-time Rajasthan travelers. Winters are crisp and comfortable, monsoon turns the surrounding hills green, and even a short stay can feel complete if you keep the itinerary focused around the old city and lakes.
02 — Things to do
