Kaza, the vibrant administrative heart of Himachal Pradesh's Spiti Valley, is an enthralling high-altitude desert town nestled at nearly 12,500 feet. Surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, barren landscapes, and the meandering Spiti River, it serves as a crucial base for exploring the region's ancient Buddhist monasteries, remote villages, and unparalleled natural beauty. Travelers are drawn to Kaza for its unique cultural tapestry, where Tibetan Buddhism thrives amidst a stark yet stunning environment. The town offers a rustic charm with its traditional mud-brick homes, bustling local market, and a warm, welcoming community. Despite its remote location, Kaza provides essential amenities, making it an ideal staging point for adventurers seeking treks, monastery visits, and an authentic Himalayan experience. Planning a visit requires consideration of its challenging access and the need for acclimatization to its high altitude.

05 — Getting there
The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar, KUU), approximately 250 km away. From Bhuntar, taxis or buses are available to Manali, then onwards to Kaza (seasonal via Kunzum Pass). Alternatively, Shimla Airport (SLV) or Leh Airport (IXL) are also options, requiring longer road journeys.
The nearest major railway stations are Chandigarh (CDG) or Kalka (KLK). From there, one must take a bus or taxi to Shimla, then embark on the challenging road journey to Kaza via the Kinnaur Valley.
Kaza is accessible via two main routes. The more popular route during summer (June-October) is from Manali via the formidable Kunzum Pass (seasonal). The other, longer but often open for more months, is from Shimla via Kinnaur Valley, following the Hindustan-Tibet Highway. Both routes are challenging, with rough terrain and require experienced drivers or local buses.
