01 — Overview
Dhauladhar views, Tibetan culture, forest walks, and cafe-slow mountain days.
Dharamshala is really two linked hill towns. Lower Dharamshala has Kotwali Bazaar, the cricket stadium, the war memorial, and everyday Kangra life; Upper Dharamshala rises into McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot, Bhagsu, and Naddi, where cedar, pine, and oak forests open toward the Dhauladhar range. McLeod Ganj became globally known after the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community settled here following the 1959 Tibetan uprising. Today, the Tsuglagkhang / Dalai Lama Temple area, Namgyal Monastery, Tibetan Museum, bookshops, momo counters, craft shops, and quiet circumambulation paths give the town a strong cultural identity beyond standard hill-station sightseeing. The best trip moves slowly: temple and museum mornings in McLeod Ganj, forest walks to St. John in the Wilderness, Bhagsunag Temple and waterfall, sunset from Naddi, art and gardens at Norbulingka Institute in Sidhpur, and a clear-weather trek toward Triund or Dharamkot. Dharamshala suits families, solo travelers, spiritual seekers, beginner trekkers, cafe hoppers, and anyone who wants Himalayan views without rushing too far into the high mountains.
